As one of key components of GM food management,GM food labeling is the focus area for consumers in terms of right to know and choice, also the focus area for policy makers and industry. In order to provide scientific justification for improving and making more reasonable regulation on GM food labeling, this study analysis production, application and benefits of GM food;different stages of GM food labeling transformation;and establish an ultrafast, universal and visual screening method for dual GM events. The main contents and conclusions of this study were as follows:1.Analyzed production and application of GM soybean and corn in US as both are very common raw materials for food processing. The adoption of GM soybean and corn in US is around 93%,wherein,in recent 5 years, the average production is 100million tons from 2012-2016,and 47%of the production is for US domestic consumption, and 45%is for export.Meanwhile, the average corn production is 340million tons, around 44%of those are directly or indirectly consumed by human, which means GM food has been largely consumed by US people.Regarding social-economic and environmental benefits, the global production of soybean, corn and canola has been increased 180million tons,350million tons and 10.6 million tons respectively in the past 20 years. In 2015,global farmers got 15.4billion USD direct benefit, and 48%is from farmers in developing countries.New biotechnology products like stacked trait have been adopted very quickly, playing an important role to incrase food supply, stabilize commodity price and ensure the food security, which benefits the consumer indirectly. In addition, consumers also benefit from new generation GM food directly which is aimed to improve quality and health.Environment benefits from GM crops are also very significant in terms of protect biodiversity, reduce CO2 emission and address climate change.2.Analyzed GM food labeling transformation based on comparative institutional analysis, and found that the transformation is the requirement of science and technology development. The GM food labeling has been developed and improved during the game theory among government, consumer, industry and international politics via evolutionalry game theory, the tool of comparative institutional analysis. The mandatory food labeling requirements are best suited to alleviating problems of asymmetric information and are rarely effective in redressing environmental or other spillovers associated with food production and consumption. It may be an appropriate policy tool in certain circumstances.New technology like genome editing will be a challenge to current labeling system since genome edited products could be indistinguishable from conventional ones. However, genome editing is also an opportunity for improving GM food labeling system as well.Based on current regulatory consideration on genome editing derived products, the commercial cost of genome edited products would be far less ehan GM products because of over-regulatored system for GM products, and public acceptance on genome editing in plant is much higher than GM plant. It menas commercialization of genome edited products will be easier and faster than GM products.3.An ultrafast, universal and visual screening method for dual GM events has been developed on the basis of Dual Super PCR(DSPCR)and lateral flow biosensor. After the optimization of experiments including reverse primers, this novel detection method can detect limit allowing 0.05%GMOs,corresponding to single copy in maize within 10 min.The analysis of GM food production/application,labeling transformation and novel detection method provides technical support for making science based regulation of GM food labeling and other areas associated with this.
