Abstract/Summary:
Projects are crucial in the social-economic development of a country. One of the considerations in projects is the procurement of goods, works, services, and consultancies as inputs to implement projects in order to achieve the desired objectives. While several studies have focused on some aspects of procurement in the project setting, few have examined the relationship between procurement management practices and the success of a project. The purpose of this quantitative research was to examine the relationship between procurement management practices and successful projects in public sector organizations in Kenya. The dependent variable, successful projects, reflected the perception of senior procurement professionals about the success of projects in their organizations. The independent variables were strategic procurement, procurement planning, seller selection, and contract management. The respondents to the survey were 211 senior procurement professionals drawn from a probabilistic sample of public sector organizations in Kenya. Statistically significant relationships between the procurement management practices and successful projects were found. Through regression analysis, procurement planning and seller selection were identified as the most important predictors of a successful project. Public sector organizations in developing countries could use the results from the study to address effective procurement management practices in project settings with emphasis on procurement planning and seller selection. The research may also add to the body of knowledge on the role of procurement management practices in successful projects among public sector organizations in developing countries and suggests several areas of future research.
