The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between project success and the three stakeholder management attributes (collectively), as well as between project success and each of the three stakeholder management attributes (individually). These attributes were stakeholder type, extent of stakeholder engagement, and stakeholder engagement approach. Although stakeholder management is known to have an impact on project success, the relationship between these two sets of variables was not known. A quantitative methodology was used for the study with a multiple regression design. Project managers across the world within the Qualtrics Panel served as the population for the study, and the sample size was 98. The two instruments used were Pinto and Slevin's Project Implementation Profile (PIP), and the Participatory Evaluation Measurement Instrument (PEMI). The first finding was that there was no statistically significant relationship between project success and the stakeholder management attributes collectively. Secondly, only stakeholder engagement approach had a statistically significant relationship with project success, as the other two attributes did not. Thirdly, when stakeholder engagement approach was paired with each of the other two attributes, those pairs almost had a statistically significant relationship with project success. However, when only the other two attributes were combined and subsequently compared with project success (that is excluding stakeholder engagement approach), that relationship was not found to be statistically significant. This revealed stakeholder engagement approach as a key component within stakeholder management, and hence highly critical for project success. The study has enabled project managers to know the role that stakeholder management plays in the success of projects, as well as the specific attributes that contribute to this success, so they could leverage their resources accordingly.
