A set of alternative object models for an information system architecture in a distributed environment is developed using a top-down methodology which begins with the information architecture as input. The type of model which results from the methodology is evaluated against criteria found in the literature. The model incorporates strategies, objectives, and policies which result from corporate planning activities to guide the development of the alternative architectures. The model is found to meet the criteria of vertical completeness and robustness. The model does not fully meet the criteria of comprehensibility and flexibility. However, the weaknesses of the model in these areas were not so serious as to lead to the conclusion that the model is inappropriate for use as a tool for the design of information system architectures. |
