This dissertation considers continuous mode icebreaking in a semi-infinite sheet of level ice. Forces are considered to be symmetric, and motion is limited to surge, heave, and pitch. Equations of motion and a method of solution are developed. Expressions for ice-related and other significant forces are derived. A computer program which simulates the surge, heave, and pitch motions is given. A second program which calculates average values for ice resistance (surge-direction forces) is also presented. Results are compared with model and full-scale data.
