Abstract/Summary:
From 1966 to the mid 1970's, over six hundred academic library buildings were built. During this extraordinary period, many different architectural forms were designed and important concepts dealing with the design and planning of libraries were advanced.; The study investigated the views of library directors, library building consultants and architects on important issues in design and planning library buildings. For this purpose, a paradigm was constructed, that was used to develop the questionnaire. Many statements made by library building planners were incorporated into the questionnaire. These statements were submitted to the respondents for their reaction.; In recent years, a number of significant factors such as lack of funding, declining student enrollment, the need for energy conservation, and progress in library automation, have begun to affect the philosophy of library building design and planning. Speculation as to their impact has been considered. The study revealed that although the respondents agreed on many issues, there were a significant number of points on which they disagreed. Particularly, the study showed that there is a need for improved dialogue between librarians and architects.
