Abstract/Summary:
The P.D.E. includes a manual for small unit managers who must automate with computing equipment but have little experience. The treatment of subjects ranges from information theory to computer operations. The importance of successful automation is stressed including the major impetus, competition. The computer's potential contributions to the various levels of management are explored with examples of success and failure.; The humane and effective management of the people and processes involved in computer operations are discussed, including the latest developments in user health concerns. Hardware and software options available to small organizations are explored, along with strategies for effective selection and procurement. The computer applications used by small organizations are discussed. Word processing, spreadsheet and data bases, graphics and desktop publishing are each explored with respect to features, cost and capabilities. Security, legal and ethical issues are introduced.; The P.D.E. also includes an academic contextual statement which treats the management of computer technology by nontechnical managers of small organizations. Aspects involved in automating all types of organizations are explored, including both social and academic significance.; Attention is paid to management theorists and futurists writing in the field of information technology and management theory. Their observations about the impact of change is related to information resources management. The contextual statement traces the progress in both the development and application of computers and how computers have changed management practices. The contextual statement examines how the empowerment of information workers with ready access to corporate-wide information flows coupled with increased authority to make decisions has served to flatten the organizational structure. The implications of these changes for managers of small organizations are explored. The contextual statement also provides a preliminary report on the effectiveness of the manual as reported by a sample of small unit managers.
