This generic qualitative study takes a look at the experiences of successful urban minority students that have impacted their academic self-efficacy. The identified themes and subsequent analysis allowed for a closer look at a population of students whose experiences deserve further investigation as a means of replicating academic success for a larger percentage of urban school students. Twelve themes emerged from data collected from participants who were high school seniors attending a high school in an urban area in the Midwest part of the United States during semi-structured interviews. Themes that emerged include the influence of family, the influence of friends, belief systems, action steps, and suggestions for educators. Protective factors that aid in the development of academic self-efficacy are included in this report. |
