Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is mapping people's ways of seeing the phenomenon of higher education expansion through the private sector on the basis of texts and interviews. The map explores the whole range of people's views of the phenomenon. And by comparing the map with the comprehensive map based on the existing theories and studies, I suggest an alternative regional way of seeing the phenomenon that cannot be found from the existing perspectives and theories.;For "text mapping" and "interview mapping," I use a qualitative research method--phenomenography. For "text mapping," I analyze 34 related studies of Korean higher education expansion through the private sector. And I interviewed 52 Koreans (five presidents, ten professors, eight students, seven parents, five private school founders and their second generation, seven specialists, one congressman, and eight public officers) for the interview mapping.;In chapter II, I investigated the studies of higher education expansion through the private sector of the countries that have a mass private sector in higher education: Japan, the Philippines, Brazil, and Columbia. In chapter III, in order to make a map of the phenomenon of higher education expansion through the private sector based on the existing theories, I analyzed state theories and views of education, perspectives on private higher education, and educational system expansion theories. On the basis of the analysis, I made a comprehensive map of the phenomenon of higher education expansion through the private sector.;In chapter V, I investigate and map the people's ways of seeing the phenomenon of higher education expansion through the private sector on the basis of the texts and interviews. And I suggest a possibility of an alternative way of seeing the phenomenon in question on the basis of the comparison between the map of the existing theories and the map of the people's ways of seeing the phenomenon. The map on the basis of the texts and interviews show me a possibility of regional alternative ways of seeing the phenomenon of higher education. One is an 'individualistic structural perspective' and another is a 'laissez-faire perspective.'.;I hope this study gives a direction to paradigmatic disputes of the present Korean academic society and becomes a path that leads Korean scholars to make Korean education theory in the context of Korean society and to situate their ways of seeing the phenomena in the body of world knowledge.
