Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation tests hypotheses to determine which theories are useful in explaining human rights variations. The author employs ordered logit with pooled cross-sectional time-series data to test the explanatory power of various frameworks. The findings indicate that violent international and domestic conflict have an adverse effect upon the human rights practices of states. The findings also indicate that increased levels of democracy and levels of wealth (as measured in monetary units) are generally associated with good human rights practices. In addition, the findings show that levels of wealth (as measured in nonmonetary units), the state's position in the international political economy, and the state's incorporation into the international political economy have little or no impact on human rights practices.
