Abstract/Summary:
This project pursues Christ-centered, expositional preaching from the Old Testament in Deuteronomy. The contemporary church suffers from an absence of Old Testament preaching. When Old Testament preaching occurs, the message results in a moralistic charge, righteous indignation against sin, contemporary self-help, or ignoring the text to skip to Jesus. This project confronts any method of preaching the Old Testament that falls short of exalting Christ. The project strives toward a method of preaching the Old Testament that honors it as God's holy Word for his people to live in humble obedience. Biblical texts and theological principles establish a strong foundation for Christ-centered hermeneutics in expository preaching. Research shows a Christian understanding of the Old Testament mandates a Christ-centered hermeneutic. The Old Testament faithfully exposited points to Jesus as the fulfillment of God's Word and plan for salvation. Historical and modern models demonstrate how the practice has developed from the New Testament to today. Research identifies a method for preaching Christ-centered, expositional sermons from the Old Testament. This method provides a model to measure and evaluate the project director's sermons. The project implementation spanned four weeks. Four sermons demonstrated the Christ-centered, expository preaching method's implementation. Twelve congregational participants provided evaluations on the Christ-centered focus of each sermon. A scholar provided evaluation of the project director's chosen implementation of the method. Analysis measures and compares all evaluation scores to show overall progress and improvement in the project director's preaching skill.
