In my dissertation, I argue that a theological anthropology pervades his religious thought.;I examine systematically the following topics in Newman's writings in order to analyze critically the theological anthropology that shapes much of his religious writings. Chapter two situates Newman in nineteenth century British thought as the historical context for my critical interpretation of his works. I indicate the influence of Evangelicalism, Tractarianism, and Liberalism upon Newman's thought in order to introduce the main themes that characterize his theological anthropology.;In the subsequent chapters I offer a critical interpretation of the theological anthropology that pervades Newman's thought. In chapter three I will study Newman's understanding of the human person as sinner. In chapter four I study Newman's view of the human person as graced. Here I examine the categories of the supernatural, providence, and the sacramental principle to evaluate Newman's interest in turning toward God. In the fifth chapter I study Newman's view of the graced individual as believer. Here I examine the categories of justifying and implicit faith, implicit and explicit reason, and natural and revealed religion to evaluate critically the integration of Newman's turning to the subject and his turning to God. In the sixth chapter, I study the human person's progressing in Christian growth. I examine the categories of virtue, holiness, and community as illustrative of Newman's theological anthropology. The last chapter offers a summation of my argument and an assessment of Newman's contribution to theological anthropology. | Keywords/Search Tags: | Theological anthropology, Newman, Chapter, Examine the categories | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
