Abstract/Summary:
Nitric oxide (NO) has been a recent research focus for drug delivery. NO is naturally produced in the body and known to be a signaling molecule in many physiological processes, including wound healing. Studies also show NO to be an antibacterial agent. The incorporation of NO into medical materials pose significant potential for patients suffering from chronic wounds. This work describes polymer and inorganic materials that are designed to release nitric oxide for enhanced wound healing applications. Included are examples of combination therapy with silver ions and estrogen to achieve greater enhanced healing than NO as a single treatment.
