Abstract/Summary:
Postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality that exists worldwide and remains a leading cause of maternal death in the United States. To address this problem, The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) has begun a multi-year initiative entitled the Postpartum Hemorrhage Project. The primary function of their evidence-based project is to improve practitioners' recognition, readiness, and response to hemorrhage in the postpartum population. Labor and delivery nurses in a regional perinatal center received simulation education in addition to the AWHONN required modules developed for the project. The nurses were directed to change from estimation of blood loss to quantification of blood loss. At the conclusion of the education, the nurses' practice was evaluated through retrospective chart review, which revealed a change in practice with an improvement in quantification of blood loss by 51.9%. Reevaluation and reeducation is needed to improve this process.;Keywords: postpartum hemorrhage, self-learning module, low fidelity simulation.
