Abstract/Summary:
Description. A three quarter inch Umatic videocassette presentation describing a system of developing documentary film programs on health issues for commercial television stations, and the local follow-up programs undertaken by stations who utilize the documentarys. A critical case study is provided utilizing "More Than a Paycheck", one of the documentarys produced by Mr. Kavanaugh. The video presentation is also hosted by the author. Areas discussed are the ubiquitous nature of television, capabilities television has been shown to have for changing behaviors and attitudes about health issues, the Becker Health Belief Model as it may be applied to the subject of cancer, principles of media influence, the independent variables to be considered in successful communication, television as a credible medium related to medicine as a credible profession. Selected examples are presented of local program efforts in New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Louisville and Youngstown, Ohio. A survey of broadcasters interaction with their local health communities is discussed along with the findings on broadcaster recognition and program production in health areas. The videocassette is thirty one minutes in viewing length.
