Abstract/Summary:
This paper focused on managing communication in healthcare organizations. The general problem is healthcare professionals continue to experience problems effectively communicating with patients. The method leveraged the work of Yin (2009) as it pertains to understanding the communication process and Courtenay et al. (2009), who used the qualitative research method. Data for this study was collected for six months. The data consist primarily of questionnaires. Interview and survey techniques were included in the data collection process. The data collection process helped formulate opinions regarding patient-physician communication. Information from the questionnaires was used primarily to analyze and evaluate the data. Analysis of the data was categorized using the NVivo software. A key finding was that health literacy helped identify, increase, improve, and understand the communication process between patients and physicians. Examining historical data was vital to create strategies that expand healthcare communication. The study investigated and researched possibilities of increasing communication methods. The research study consisted of literature from several sources like the Internet and other publications. The research literature provided an understanding of how improving communication and technology improves health. The sample population included 15 patients, 15 physicians, 15 administrators, and 15 health services staff members in Winter Haven, Florida. The research findings were analyzed further in chapter four by focusing on communication characteristics.
