Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to develop a model for preparing professional audiology personnel in Nigeria. Professional audiologists in Nigeria are expected to provide complete audiologic evaluation, hearing aid selection, speech reading, auditory training and counseling, particularly in special schools for the hearing-impaired and to develop, conduct or supervise hearing conservation programs in regular school settings, industries as well as local government health centers. The locally trained audiologist must possess adequate professional knowledge and skills in order to accept a greater responsibility for the management of individuals with hearing problems.; The selection of students for training and the competencies expected of them on completing their professional programs are discussed in the form of 'training modules' vis-a-vis basic science, medical, educational, hearing conservation, aural rehabilitation and clinical practicum. Specific problems facing the students, faculty and the training process itself are examined. Suggestions are provided to reduce these problems. In addition to mobilization of local resources, it is suggested that international cooperation be sought in the development, establishment and implementation of audiology training programs in Nigeria. While the Nigerian model may not be unique, it may provide cost-effective means for meeting the shortage of hearing health care professionals in many developing countries.
