Abstract/Summary:
Housing is one of the most crucial problems confronting the aged individual in American society today. This study describes the male occupants in an apartment complex specifically designed for older adults and examines the effects of this housing arrangement on the resident's sense of well-being, his attitude about his housing and the interaction among the tenants. The method used to pursue this study was a descriptive analytical investigation of the male resident in his environment. The study can be classified as both a community study and a case sudy utilizing thirty male residents and also directing attention to one single case in order to provide a longitudinal approach.;There is a need for heightened activity in the construction and organization of special housing facilities for older persons. This study provides certain baseline information partly as useful backdrop for later studies of life-styles of residents and more particularly a documentation of the tenants' reaction to perceived residential requirements for older persons. The type of housing offered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development and local planning agency as described in this study has implications for further research. An analysis covering more recent advances in public housing and the management aspect of such housing is in order and should be called to the attention of responsible local and federal officials.;The findings indicate that the housing site provides a social milieu that is conducive to achievement by the residents of a satisfied life. The apartments are within the financial means of the population sampled and provide special design features and facilities inside the dwelling unit which the older person wants and needs. Additionally, the complex is located in an area which insures tenant safety and access to services. Morale was seen as positive by the overwhelming majority. In terms of health, friends, work, finances, religion, usefulness, contentment, and family, a high degree of satisfaction was evidenced. The housing facility served to concentrate rather than diffuse the field of potential friends and support. The psychological considerations appeared to be met inasmuch as the privacy, individuality and dignity of the elderly residents were preserved. The ratio of females to males apparently had little affect on the majority of the male residents. The findings of the individual case study appear to be consistent with those of the other twenty-nine respondents. In sum, the opinions of the male residents indicate that the apartment complex is providing what it is that they are seeking in terms of living arrangements.
