This study is a quantitative assessment of the biological effects of solar ultraviolet radiation, particularly the UV-B component ((lamda) = 320-280 nm). Since this investigation mainly focuses on aquatic ecosystems, the optical properties of natural waters and their attenuation of solar UV was described, as well as several approaches to measuring the biologically effective solar radiation incident at the water surface.
