Abstract/Summary:
The Problem. Lateral Eye Movements permit classification of individuals based on directional patterns of Lateral Eye Movements. It has been shown that the Lateral Eye Movement groups differ on a number of personality, cognitive, perceptual and physiological variables. Two major theoretical views have grown from the research, one that the Lateral Eye Movement relates to cortical functions, and one that it is related to subcortical function. The purpose of the study was to determine if the groups demonstrate significant differences regarding physiological, perceptual, and cognitive measures, thereby supporting one of the theoretical views.;Results. The results indicated that classification of individuals into Lateral Eye Movement groups was reliable. The Critical Flicker Fusion threshold for Right Movers was significantly higher than for Bidirectionals or Left Movers. Significantly lower Necker Cube Reversals were found for Left Movers than for either Bidirectionals or Right Movers. No significant difference was found on the Stroop Test for the Lateral Eye Movement groups. A significant difference was found between the performance of Males and Females on the Stroop Test. The results of this study support that the Lateral Eye Movements are related to subcortical functions.;Method. One hundred and five volunteers were classified as Right, Bidirectional, or Left Movers. Each subject participated in the three experimental conditions. Critical Flicker Fusion was determined by the psychophysical method of limits for ascending and descending trials. The Necker Cube Reversals consisted of four timed observation trials. The three-card Stroop Test consisted of a Word-, Color-, and Color-Word Card.
