Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is to grasp the relationship between surface layer properties and durability of concrete and mortar and also to develop the surface modification methods for its durability. The rapid deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has become a serious social problem in the world. For the purpose of preventing rapid deterioration it is most important to stop or inhibit the penetration of water, chloride ions, carbon dioxide and oxygen into reinforced concrete structures. Accordingly, it is considered that the durability of reinforced concrete structures greatly depends on the surface layer properties of concrete and mortar.; In this paper, experimental research was carried out on the surface layer properties and improvement in the durability of concrete and mortar by surface layer modifications. The author studied the relation between surface layer properties and the durability of concrete and mortar. The improvement in the durability of concrete and mortar was also researched using various barrier penetrant treatments, by mixing various admixtures and by polymer impregnation.; Therefore the author successfully clarified the properties of surface layers of concrete and mortar as well as the development of various modification methods for the improvement of its durability.
