Abstract/Summary:
Pressure transient analysis is an important tool in the evaluation of hydrocarbon-bearing formations. From analysis of the pressure response with time in an oil or gas well, important information can be obtained for use in reservoir characterization and analysis of individual wells.;The purpose of this study is to identify specific technological gaps in major areas of pressure transient analysis and design and to develop new techniques or improve existing methods to fill those gaps. The technology developed in this study is incorporated into a compilation of techniques for pressure transient analysis. The study consists of the following specific tasks: (1) Synthesize existing technology in major areas of pressure transient analysis. (2) Identify specific technological gaps in each area. (3) Develop new analysis methods or refine existing methods to fill the gaps identified. (4) Incorporate the new or refined methods into a summary of analysis and design methods for pressure transient analysis.;This study focuses on several specific aspects of well test analysis and design. Some of the technological gaps addressed in the study are as follows: (1) A method to account for effects of near-wellbore turbulent flow on estimates of formation properties needs to be revised. (2) A simpler method for determining average drainage-area pressure, ;In summary, the proposed study identifies technological gaps in major areas of pressure transient analysis and develops new procedures or refines existing methods to fill those gaps. Results of the study are integrated with existing technology to produce an up-to-date compilation of well test analysis and design techniques.
