Abstract/Summary:
Even though it has long been established that Borges' stories of infamy in Historia universal de Ia infamia (1935) were originally published in Revista multicolor de los sabados, the literary supplement of Critica, no detailed study has been made to date of Borges' contributions to that literary enterprise. Indeed, a true understanding of Borges' first explorations with prose narrations can only be attained within the intertextual matrix Critica offers.;The first part of this dissertation provides a general description and classification of the varied materials of Revista multicolor and shows how infamy itself may be viewed as the central thematics of that text. In the use of exaggeration, authorial misrepresentation, plagiarism and unauthorized translations, Borges and the other contributors to Revista multicolor become accomplices in that infamy. Borges' contributions as editor, reviewer, essayist and translator have also been examined in order to trace their relationship to his literary concerns at the time.;The second part proposes that the first short stories by Borges, written as part of a "series" of biographical sketches of infamous characters, cannot be truly understood independently of its original intertextual context in Critica. In turn, a study of the critical implications of Borges' 1935 prologue, which recognizes the influence of G. K. Chesterton, R. L. Stevenson and J. Sternberg, can be most justly read within the pages of Revista multicolor, where we find many stories by Chesterton and a series of articles on movies by well-known directors.;The final part of the dissertation provides an inter-textual reading of "Hombre de la esquina rosada", "Un teologo en la muerte", "El proveedor de iniquidades Monk Eastman", "El incivil maestro de ceremonias Kotsuke no Suke" y "El tintorero enmascarado Hakim de Merv" to illustrate Borges' narrative strategies at the beginning of his career as short story writer.;Finally, the dissertation provides the first bibliography of Revista multicolor de los sabados.
