The Upper Floridan aquifer in southern South Carolina and northeastern Georgia is composed of 76 percent low-magnesium calcite with the remainder made up primarily by silicates. Based on ground-water chemistry, the aquifer can be subdivided into two zones: (1) a low-salinity zone (Cl ;In the mixing zone, concentrations of most ground-water constituents deviate from the values expected for conservative mixing of fresh water with seawater. Mineral saturation and mass balance calculations show that this can be explained by dissolution of carbonate minerals in response to CO;The ground-water composition changes along flow paths in the low-salinity zone with decreasing calcium and bicarbonate concentrations, and increasing magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, silica, fluoride, pH, and... |
