Abstract/Summary:
This research establishes a theoretical model of guanxi (interpersonal relationship) in Chinese interactions as exemplified in a study of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) elite politics. Guanxi in China has a deep cultural root embedded in Chinese philosophy and thought as well as the inspired ideal personality which is preoccupied with a man-centered social system and ethic-oriented social norms. Based on a comprehensive investigation of the origin of guanxi culture, this study focuses on guanxi's history, its enduring influence on Chinese society, and the process by which guanxi has evolved and been integrated into Chinese social norms and ethics.; Taking into consideration guanxi's continuous role in the past, the primary emphasis of this study centers on its significance as a modern phenomenon in effecting both Chinese social interactions and the power structure in modern Chinese society and politics. This identification of guanxi culture specifies some of the broader implications of its applicability when interpreting Chinese society as a whole and provides an alternative approach in decoding its system of interpersonal relations. The four dimensions of guanxi as defined in this research are fundamental to depicting guanxi's function within the CCP elite: The instrumental, etiquette, emotional, and moral dimensions.; Instrumental guanxi is prompted by self-interest: Acquiring both generous repayment and a personal advantage. Etiquette guanxi follows social rituals and serves to establish and maintain harmonious human relations with one's acquaintances, coworkers, colleagues, superiors, or subordinates. Emotional guanxi arises when affective sentiment is primary to the regulation of interpersonal relationships and serves as an impetus for promoting close personal bonds such as in a time-tested friendship. Moral guanxi is established and maintained by following established ethics which morally obligate members within a guanxi network. Both the dynamic internal force and the merits of guanxi rely on the fact that in practice the four dimensions of guanxi co-mingle. These four dimensions reinforce one another when cooperating harmoniously, but undermine one another when coexisting in tension.
