Abstract/Summary:
This paper uses the Chinese Urban Household Survey of 1991 to empirically examine effects of education on earnings by educational level, by gender, by sector and by type of wages for public employees. Effects of education are higher for this sample than what studies have found with earlier data. Results indicate extensive gender differences, in particular, higher premiums on education for women, which is caused by substantially lower earnings of female workers with little education. Results suggest that the emerging private sector does not provide higher returns to education for both gender groups in relative to public sectors in the Chinese economy.
