Abstract/Summary:
This clinical dissertation reviewed effective leadership qualities and characteristics in advanced practice nurses and their recollection of receiving training of such qualities and characteristics. The qualitative approach utilized an open-ended survey and follow-up discussions of nurse practitioners in a major Midwest metropolitan healthcare center with primary and tertiary designation in order to ascertain their views of effective leadership quality and characteristics. The results show that leadership training and education does occur within graduate school training and from other sources. Some of the participants felt effective leadership characteristics included: good communication, being adaptable, assertiveness, critical thinking, and playing a role in staff development and mentoring. The results gave rise to suggestions on how to construct stronger leadership training and education for advanced practice nurses to produce effective advanced practice nurse leaders within the role of the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice). Suggestions for future research and implications are recommended.
