Abstract/Summary:
Organizational assessment models have been created and implemented in order to enhance the performance of organizations. It is postulated that existing assessment models may have inherent limitations that inadvertently limit their beneficial impact on the organizations which choose to utilize them. A review of one typically employed model--The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award--is conducted as an example of some of the limitations that may be present in assessment models. A qualitative supplementary model--based on complex adaptive system research and composed of seven items--is proposed. It is suggested that the proposed methodology be used in conjunction with existing methodologies, such as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.; Results from the proposed methodology suggests that a different set of organizational attributes, when compared to currently existing assessment methodologies, are detected in the process of investigating an organization from a complex adaptive system perspective. The new insights do not replace knowledge that is acquired from the application of existing assessment methodologies, but rather augments insight acquired from these current methodologies.
