Abstract/Summary:
A subband coding system is investigated which dynamically adapts to the local orientation of image features. A re-orientation scheme is used in conjunction with a separable octave-band subband decomposition. The subband pixels are efficiently encoded using embedded zerotree wavelet coding, arithmetic coded trellis coded quantization, and stack-run coding. In addition, new directional quadtree structures are designed to enhance the embedded zerotree coding by exploiting the orientation of separable subband decompositions. The decoded images demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed methods.
