Efficient channel resource management in cellular network systems

Abstract/Summary:
A cellular network provides a high degree of spectrum reuse and efficient bandwidth management by allowing geometry repetitions and frequency reuse. In cellular networks, the radio connection between mobile nodes and base stations, termed as a ‘channel,’ can be viewed as a logic link. The focus of this dissertation is on the management of such logical channels. Much research has been conducted in the area of channel resource management. Most of the existing resource management strategies combine interference prevention and channel management strategies together. A two-sub-layer framework of channel resource management, analogous to Operating System resource management, is proposed in this dissertation. Based on the proposed framework, two channel borrowing schemes also have been proposed. These channel borrowing schemes include look-ahead channel reservation and release, look-ahead channel borrowing and returning, and working-set-based channel borrowing and returning. The problem of deadlock during channel allocation and borrowing is also discussed in this dissertation. The conditions of deadlocks are analyzed, and preliminary solutions to prevent, detect, or avoid deadlock during channel borrowing are also proposed. Finally, the simulation architecture, software modules, and simulation results are presented and analyzed in detail.
