Abstract/Summary:
Mobile computing devices like laptop computers and PDAs are becoming more and more popular recently. As a result, the demand to provide Internet access for roaming users is growing rapidly. Unfortunately conventional IP is designed for static Internet hosts and hence not suitable to portable or mobile applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient approach called Incremental Domain Name System (IDNS). IDNS is a complete solution in that it supports both Internet host mobility and portability. IDNS uses the widely deployed DNS to identify and track down the mobile host. IP address is hence solely used for routing purpose. Compared to existing mobility support standard—Mobile IP, IDNS is more efficient on both data traffic and signaling traffic. IDNS is also more flexible since with cooperation of Authentication, Authorization, Accounting (AAA) infrastructure, IDNS users can choose different policy and service on demand and be correspondingly charged.
