The purpose of this qualitative study is to chronicle the implementation of a two-way, Spanish/English, 50/50 immersion program in a demographically changing, rural, elementary setting. The rapid influx of English second language learners in rural school districts impacts the quality of language services provided to second language learners.; This study examines the bilingual education model of two-way immersion through the perspective of native English and Spanish speaking parents, classroom teachers, school administrators and superintendent. A comprehensive review of research addressing traditional bilingual education services and second language acquisition is presented. A foundation for understanding the phenomenon of immersion implementation from the perspective of the program stakeholders provides a unique insight into the sociological, political and educational nature of immersion education. |
