Abstract/Summary:
The primary focus of this dissertation is the creation of a Web-based tutorial for the young beginning piano student. This tutorial is specifically designed to provide online learning support to students using Alfred's Basic Piano Library Lesson Book, Level 1A, pp. 1–26. Central to the pedagogical approach of this study is the integration of ideas from Robert Gagne's Conditions of Learning and Edwin Gordon's Music Learning theory. This supporting paper provides some historical background, and serves as a basic introduction to Gagne and Gordon's learning theories. The pedagogical approach used in Alfred's Lesson Book, Level 1A is evaluated, and the design and construction of the tutorial are discussed. In addition to providing reinforcement to the materials found in the Alfred's Lesson Book, Level 1A, the tutorial can function as a virtual instructor, providing the young beginning piano student opportunities for asynchronous learning. A CD-R containing the tutorial and other supporting electronic resources associated with this study accompanies this dissertation.*; *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). The CD requires the following system requirements: Internet browser.
