The dissertation examines the social, discursive, and visual constructions of femininity in the U.S. South with special focus on the intersections of gender, race, and region. Through analyses of historical work and a wide range of cultural objects, the project explores both dominant and "reconstructed" tales of regional womanhood in order to create a narrative of the everyday imagings of Southern femininity which joins the insights of cultural theory with the work of Southern studies. |
