Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation provides a discussion of word production in Russian from phonological perspective. The present approach is an extension of Raffelsiefen's (1992) theory of Word Recognition into the area of word production. Raffelsiefen's theory accounts for native speakers' ability to recognize words by relating them semantically and phonologically. She shows how related words give rise to Correlative Patterns which serve as a source for derivational morphemes.;The present study is an attempt to develop Correlative Patterns into a tool of word production. Traditional morphology accounts for productive types of word production. Nonce words, borrowings, child language, and folk etymology are not productive types. However, native speakers can easily recognize and produce them. This contrast indicates a need for a different account for their production. I tried to develop an approach to word production which would include non-productive phenomena.;To develop such an approach, I had to abandon morphology in favor of phonology. One of the reasons is that there is psycho-linguistic evidence that along with words where morphemes are clearly perceived by native speakers, there are also words which are perceived as indivisible or which do not have clear morphemic boundaries, e.g. 'slap' and 'Cossacks'. In addition, it is much easier to account for such phenomena as indeclinables, e.g. 'puree' and 'mirror', and the occurrence of doublets, e.g. 'to provide with shorts' 1st pers.sg., from a phonological perspective.;As a result, I developed a system that accounts for word production in terms of word patterns, correlative patterns, and productivity markers. For example, 'X MEHT...
