A notion of rank for enveloping algebras and local theta correspondence

We introduce a notion of rank for ideals in the universal enveloping algebra of gln . This notion is used to develop a theory of rank for primitive ideals, which parallels and extends the theory of rank for unitary representations of classical groups.
