Abstract/Summary:
This study is a theological analysis of the arguments of the Muslim fundamentalist Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966) and that of the Muslim modernist Muhammad Sa'id al-Ashmawi on adoption of the Sari'a.;The debate on the Sari'a has its implications for the Church of Jesus Christ. This study is an attempt to understand the Muslim debate on adopting the Sari'a. The fundamentalists disagree with the modernist Muslims on the issue of how to apply the Sari'a and what the Sari'a is. Each of the two schools, the fundamentalist and the Modernist, has a different interpretation of the Quran. Each tries to find legitimacy from either the Quran or the Sunnah. A brief account is given on how each school interprets a particular verse from the Quran. A biblical response on the matter of the Sari'a is also included.;To understand the background of the debate between the two schools, this study includes a brief account of the history of the fundamentalist movement in Egypt. Although the Muslim fundamentalist movement is taking place in many other parts of the Muslim world, Egypt has been the center of the intellectual debate between the modernist and fundamentalist Muslims. Although the Muslim fundamentalists are not the figures of political authority in Egypt, yet the Muslim fundamentalist movement in Egypt is considered the mother of all of the other fundamentalist movements in the Muslim world.;In a hostile environment, the Church of Jesus Christ is required to follow certain biblical commands. This study attempts to clarify these biblical principles.
