Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines how literature (especially works related to "faith") can help Christian Chinese Indonesians overcome grief or loss when other kinds of help, such as American-style "counseling" or "therapy" or books on grief and loss, are not readily available.; The study combines research and creative writing. Despite the existence of various different kinds of loss and grief, concentration will be given to grief in the context of bereavement, the loss of a loved one through death, which can be considered the most significant loss that commonly affects Christian Chinese Indonesians.; The dissertation first presents some experts' views on dealing with grief following loss. This basic information may serve as a guide since many Chinese Christian Indonesians are often not explicitly aware of the phenomenon of grief following their loss or their need to grieve properly. The goal is to assist both the bereaved individuals and Christian leaders who desire to help them.; The study also focuses on literary works related to 'faith' (such as Biblical texts) that she personally has found very helpful in guiding her through her own grief and leading the way to a hopeful future. Although each grief experience is unique and Biblical texts may speak differently to different individuals or even to one individual at different times, the project intends to show that these texts, just like many others, can help promote healing and strengthen faith during difficult times.; In addition to the presentation of some guides to writing, especially writing to heal, the dissertation presents creative pieces, consisting of short stories, poems and a letter, to show how writing can contribute significantly to the accomplishment of healing following loss or bereavement. They are included to give readers examples of what can be done, and they have, indeed, proven helpful, even therapeutic, after loss. Even simple pieces like short poems or letters may help bereaved individuals cope with their hurting souls.
