Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to determine the essential knowledge and skill competencies that were considered to be essential for newborn developmental specialists. The information for this study was gathered by collecting and analyzing critical incident reports from individuals in NICU's, follow-up clinics, and community settings. An expert panel reviewed the results and synthesized the final set of 41 competency statements. To be effective in the delivery of developmental care, developmental specialists must demonstrate behaviors that address the unique needs of infants and toddlers with histories of prematurity or medical fragility and their families.
