Responsibilities and competencies of the health educator addressed in health education related journal abstracts

Abstract/Summary:
Little is known about the coverage of the responsibilities and competencies of health educators in a wide range of journals related to health education. This study seeks to provide guidance for health educators in determining the most appropriate health education journals for a variety of professional and educational purposes. Abstracts were selected from 100 peer-reviewed health education journals 1995–2000 (n = 17,391) and compared to the 10 responsibilities and 39 competencies of health educators at both the entry and graduate levels. one or more responsibilities. Journal of Nutrition Education and Health Education & Behavior received the two highest reviewed failed to specifically address any health education responsibility. Responsibility I (needs assessment) and Responsibility IV (program evaluation) addressing the majority of the responsibilities of the health educator. These findings have potential impact for decisions about library subscriptions, credential review, manuscript submission, and professional development.
