Abstract/Summary:
This case study describes a five-stage model for the treatment of an AIDS patient and his family using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Stage 1 dealt with medical and emotional crisis management. Stage 2 included the transition from aggressive medical treatment to palliative care. Stage 3 included helping the client work with his partner and family to achieve closure and to deal with the client's physical and emotional changes. Stage 4 dealt with home visits, hospice care, and preparedness for death. Stage 5 included bereavement issues involving the partner, family, and therapist. EFT has not previously been used with clients dealing with AIDS, but it appears to target the emotional component of the client and all of those surrounding him/her during this profound crisis.
