Abstract/Summary:
New one-dimensional methods of axial compressor and turbine design and off-design performance calculations are presented. The calculations may be carried out at various levels of complexity, depending on the available information. The various levels of simulation include steady-state calculation, simulation based on the component performance map, and one-dimensional row-by-row calculation. The row-by-row analysis is equally applicable to both the turbine and compressor components. For the compressor, detailed analysis of the modified diffusion factor with compressibility effects was utilized to determine the off-design efficiency. For the turbine component, empirical relations were used. Steady state calculations yielded excellent agreement with measured data, and the ability to predict the entire compressor performance map given only the geometry. The calculation method was then extended and integrated into the dynamic simulation code GETRAN. Dynamic simulations of single and multi-spool gas turbine engines undergoing extreme transients were performed. The non-linear dynamic calculations of gas turbine engines were compared with experimental data. The comparison showed excellent agreement with the data.
