Abstract/Summary:
Core is a concert work written for chamber orchestra. There are some parallels between my conception of the shifting of sound masses against each other and the movement of various large structures within the earth's body--such as plate tectonics. Additional correlations can be drawn between the densities of these masses and their effect on the characteristics of these masses. I suggest with Core, that the dynamics of deep earth geophysics could be used as a poetic model for the construction of a large scale work, or works. Some of the phenomena researched to define this model were the comparison of the various layers of the body of the earth with respect to their mass and density, their interaction as witnessed through plate tectonics and seismic activity. and the effects (speed, direction, reflection, refraction, and absorption) that the properties of the individual layers have upon the shockwaves (both standing and transverse) generated by earthquakes. The intent was not to sonically or musically recreate the illusion of an earthquake nor to directly apply statistical or empirical data relating to earth sciences to musical processes, but to create a cohesive work which is derived from, or perhaps governed by some of the same principals of the mechanical earth.
