Abstract/Summary:
Alfamen Aquifer System has an extension of 1.108 km2. It is located in the Province of Zaragoza (North East of Spain), Ebro basin, placed between the Jalon river and the Huerva river basins. Some important villages in the area are Epila, La Almunia, Calatorao, Alfamen and Muel. 14.462 ha of irrigation land are placed upon the aquifer system. (5.450 ha are supplied by surface water, 6.934 ha by groundwater, and other 2.078 ha are supplied in a mixed way).; From the water points inventory, geometry and hydrogeological parameters of the aquifer system were described for the three main aquifer units of the system: Jurassic, detritic Tertiary and Quaternary units. Groundwater potential maps were drawn, and groundwater level time evolution was studied too. The hydrochemistry of groundwater was also analysed. A water balance for the system was elaborated (water extractions, rain and river infiltrations, irrigation excedents and natural discharges to the rivers and springs). A theoretical model of the hydrological functioning of the system has been laid out too. In addition to this there has been a study of the agrarian use of water from an economical perspective.; The system has been divided into five domains for water management purposes. Some proposals and suggestions have been pointed out on the social perception of water problems, overexploitation, the profitable use of water profitable use of water in each domain, drought management, modernization and expansion of irrigated lands, freshwater protection, environmental aspects, and the general management of the Aquifer System of Alfamen.
