Abstract/Summary:
The objective of this dissertation is to improve the conventional scheduling procedures currently used in the hot rolling mills. First, a systematic scheduling procedure is established using a heuristic approach. The scheduling experts' guidelines are utilized, with the assistance of fuzzy set theory, to develop a simple scheduling algorithm. Then, the procedure's performance is enhanced by applying historical production data. This capability gives schedulers an early warning for any wrong decision that may occur when attempting to optimize the amount of scheduled products.;The developing procedure is tested for its accuracy as well as its efficiency using the historical data. Results of all tests support the conclusion that the proposed approach increases the efficiency of schedules while simplifying the scheduling procedure.
