Abstract/Summary:
An experimental investigation has been made into the components that determine the phase stability of metals and alloys. Contributions were found to be important across many length scales from electronic excitations to atomic vibrations and finally microstructural strains at the continuum level. The connections between length scales turn out to be most interesting and promising for future work. The metals and alloy that have been studied are U, Ce, and Pd3V.
