Abstract/Summary:
Two sections, Hypoxylon and Annulata, are accepted in the genus Hypoxylon. Section Hypoxylon differs from section Annulata in lacking a layer of carbonaceous stromatal material that surrounds individual perithecia, in lacking an annulate disc that encircles ostiole, and in having coil-like ornamentation, rather than a thickening, on the dehiscing ascospore perispore. Totally, 127 taxa are included in Hypoxylon--98 taxa in section Hypoxylon and 29 taxa in section Annulata. Thirty-nine taxa are newly described, including 34 new species and 5 new varieties. Nine new combinations are made. Cultures and/or anamorphs of 69 taxa are described or briefly mentioned. Possible origin and evolution of Hypoxylon are discussed. Keys were constructed for genera of the Xylariaceae, sections of Hypoxylon, taxa of section Hypoxylon, and taxa of section Annulata. A list is provided for approximately one thousand epithets involving Hypoxylon.
