We study the decay of near-extremal black holes in spherically symmetric models that account for the back-reaction semiclassically. In asymptotically Minkowskian spacetime, we make numerical calculations of the Ricci scalar curvature and the stress-energy tensor during evaporation. In addition, by using a near-horizon approximation, we investigate a simplified version of the Reissner-Nordström black hole which is analytically soluble in AdS2. Our calculations demonstrate that the black hole evaporation proceeds smoothly and the near-extremal black hole evolves back to an extremal ground state, until our approximations break down. |
