The purpose of the current quantitative, retrospective study was to assess the influence of an evidenced-based leadership development program implemented in 2007 on a large academic medical center in the Central United States that historically held low patient and employee satisfaction scores. The focus of the current study was to determine to what extent, if any, a relationship exists between the implementation of a leadership development program on employee satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and patient outcomes. Considering the limited information available regarding the effectiveness of leadership development programs in healthcare organizations, an assessment was necessary that identifies the implications for implementing the programs in healthcare organizations. The objectives of the current study were met through blending three distinct databases and creating a new study utilizing historical data. The data spanned five years from 2006 through 2010. The span provided data for the year pre-implementation through three years post-implementation with 2007 serving as a transition year. The program intervention served as the independent variable, with employee satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and patient outcomes serving as the dependent variables, or outcomes of interest. Analysis of the results of the research indicated that the implementation of a leadership development program resulted in significant, positive improvements in employee and patient satisfaction and improved patient outcomes.
