Examining a pattern analysis approach to malingering assessment in neuropsychology

Abstract/Summary:
A pattern analysis approach to malingering assessment allows for multiple samples of behavior across a battery and provides the opportunity for convergent validity. The ability of the Halstead Reitan Battery (HRB) to predict scores on the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) in a clinical population was examined. Participants included 195 adult subjects assessed within the past two years across various neuropsychological conditions. The predictive ability of eight measures from the HRB were explored: GNDS, TPT Memory, Speech Sounds Errors, Trails B, Total Finger Tapping, Full Scale IQ, Reliable Digit Span (RDS), and Category Total Errors. Support for the HRB measures ability to predict malingering status as classified by the TOMM was founded with a 91% classification rate. Results indicated that the HRB measures do not have a relationship with litigation status and have no predictive utility. A previously supported pattern analysis index, the Mittenberg Index, was also examined and found to have no relationship with malingering status as classified by the TOMM.
